How to make plant-based milk?

At Rewinder, a little while ago we started making our own plant based milk; we have tested with multiple ingredients and always at the time of filtering, we tried different fabrics looking for the one that would filter the best and then that could be washed well.

After several tests, we found a very light natural cotton that we decided to turn it into a bag to facilitate the work in the process. This at Rewinder, we love it! Make your life easier, and if it’s flavored, it’s better 😉

Making vegetable milk is very simple, if you try it and like it, you will repeat it frequently.

We are going to show you four different versions of plant-based milk to make: almond milk, oat milk, hazelnut milk, and black sesame milk.

They are the ones proposed by Marta Caballero on her blog Crunchy and al dente.

They are easy to make, cheap, and healthy, avoiding the generation of waste and pollution to the environment while protecting animals.

There is a very wide range of vegetable drinks, as wide as nuts, cereals or seeds you want to use. So, here are the instructions to make your own homemade vegetable milk with what you like the most: hemp, cashews, pistachios, quinoa, tiger nuts, almonds…

You can add different extra ingredients to each of them that will give it a flavor more to your liking, such as cocoa (which works great with hazelnut milk), cinnamon, lemon or orange peel, turmeric, vanilla … You can also choose for leaving them with their original flavor to use in both salty and sweet recipes.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of raw hazelnuts
  • 1 cup of raw almonds
  • 1 cup oat flakes
  • 1 cup of black sesame
  • Water
  • Coconut or sunflower oil
  • Pinch of salt
  • Agave syrup or other sweetener (optional)

You will need to:

  • A mixer
  • Bowls
  • bottles or jars to store the milk
  • And a fine fabric, in this case we suggest our Rewinder bags to make vegetable milk, which is ideal.

Preparation:

The proportion of water would be 3-4 cups for each cup of nut or seed. You can add agave syrup to taste. A teaspoon of coconut or sunflower oil improves texture and helps the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins.

The night before making our vegetable milk, we will soak the ingredient that we are going to use. This process is called and active makes the nuts easier to crush, digest and taste better. In the case of oatmeal, just soak one hour.

After soaking time, drain and rinse our basic ingredient.

Blend for several minutes with the water, which we will add little by little, a pinch of salt and the oil.

Strain through our bag. Squeeze and squeeze to get as much liquid as possible.

Taste your Plant based drink and decide if you want to sweeten, lighten, or flavor it…

Store in a container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days max.

Plant milks tend to separate into layers when standing: shake before use. We must not overheat them, or boil them as they will be cut.

Store the leftover pulp in the freezer, there are many ways to use it!

Benefits of plant milk

Plant milks are an excellent option if we want to take care of animals and the environment, but above all to nourish our body in the best possible way.

Humans are the only mammal that drinks milk after being weaned. For this reason, a large number of people end up developing lactose intolerance. Even without being allergic to milk, drinking milk can have negative health consequences. Sometimes when we drink it, we ingest the hormones and antibiotics that they supply to the cows, sheep and animals from which they extract milk.

On the other hand, there are many companies in the dairy industry with procedures that involve terrible animal abuse. Some of the cruel acts that are committed in some dairy industries is the artificial insemination of cows, so that they continue to produce milk. Also many calves are separated from their mothers shortly after birth and fed artificial milk substitutes which cause anemia and diseases.

Furthermore, the environmental impact of dairy products is very high: water is polluted with manure, the toxicity of the soil increases (due to the use of pesticides and fertilizers), high methane emissions are emitted due to the amount of animals concentrated in the industries…
